With so much emphasis to be at the top of the chain, there has been a lot of misuse in description. For example, when promoting their themselves, some event professionals will go as far as to say they are “The Best in the Business” – or something close to it. While there is no doubt a lot of quality work that a company is capable of creating, it is also important to note that the word “best” is misleading in most of these statements. At the least, it is misrepresented. Above and beyond all – the focus on being the best should only pertain to one main aspect: the best for the client.
In this day and age of the Internet and DIY – we can consider that there has been some research done on the client’s end. However, it is up to us to work with the client to come up with a solution for the probable inconsistencies that they have collected from unreliable information on the Internet (because yes, believe it or not, the Internet is not always correct). When event professionals can work with a client to achieve their vision– that is being the best for the customer. When a client can come to a designer, and they can troubleshoot any issues while remaining transparent and honest– that is being the best for the client.
The majority of event designers and producers have received awards at one time or another in their career. While it is always nice to receive recognition for the creativity, hard work, and long hours that we dedicate to our work, it doesn’t necessarily mean one vendor is superior to another. We believe that our obligation to the client supersedes all else- especially superlatives, accolades, and most importantly – ego. While an award will illustrate an artist’s capability, it is no excuse for an artist to then feel entitled to an “all-knowing” title. As experts, we should understand that the world of design evolves, and to stay pertinent in a cut-throat industry – we need to bring the award-winning skills and assets into present-day ideas, trends, and scenarios.
By taking the focus away from labeling yourself as “The Best” and focusing just on what your clientele needs, expects, and deserves – you will ensure enduring success. We feel that we can only be “The Best” if it our clients are labeling us as such because, in the end, that is all that matters.
