Over the past 20 years, the Internet has had a profound effect upon the wedding and events industry. It has changed how vendors market themselves and how consumers investigate a vendor’s reputation. It has also opened up the playing field to the creation of a multi-million dollar market segment in the form of resource websites as a “one stop shop” for the consumer. While this sounds beneficial, it is not uncommon for these resource websites to highlight companies as a top pick because the companies paid more advertising dollars – therefore possibly overlooking businesses whose quality is better, but pockets not as deep.
More importantly, the Internet and social media have provided the perfect platform for wedding and event professionals to share advice, opinions and practices – in addition to sharing what really happens behind the scenes. Prior to the world wide web, the events industry remained veiled in mystery – with little known unless you were on the inside of the business.
Now, on the other hand, a couple looking for advice on planning their wedding will be overwhelmed with sources with which to begin their research. Great, right? Not really. Frankly, a vast amount of the information floating around is cookie-cutter fluff at best and downright wrong at worst. Most available content caters to what the reader wants or expects to hear. The truth of the matter is that most event professionals are not prepared to be completely honest with clients.
Do we feel as though we can share our experiences better than the thousands of event professionals that already do? No. However, what we can do is offer completely transparent and honest experiences – nothing held back, no messy details omitted. At the end of the day, Kristina Valdmaa Designs has nothing to hide. We want our clientele to be educated about our process, the quality of the materials used, and to understand that no corner will be cut on any project we produce.
That is why we decided to roll out our newest project- The Naked Truth, a bi-weekly series published on our website discussing some of the more controversial aspects of our industry. The goal of The Naked Truth is not to refute anyone else’s opinion or one-up the competition. The aim is simple – share our industry experience to truly help others.
